Driving Inclusive Circular Impact

Unlocking the potential of circularity for socioeconomic development.
“At IMG Group, circularity is our means, people are our purpose. We walk alongside communities facing structural barriers to economic opportunity, directly and through partner organizations on the ground, strengthening their capacity to build their own path forward. Designed and driven from the outset through an inclusive lens, circularity becomes a genuine lever for social justice and equity, while easing pressure on natural resources and advancing more sustainable consumption and production patterns.”

Circularity as a driver of socio-economic development

For more than 65 years, IMG Group has operated with the conviction that industrial activity can generate long-term value for both society and shareholders.

As the first PET recycler in Portugal, IMG Group embedded circularity in its business model long before the acceleration of global sustainability frameworks.

Today, this approach extends beyond operational sustainability. Our social impact strategy builds on this expertise to support initiatives that strengthen ecosystems, expand access to education and create opportunities for communities facing structural barriers to economic opportunity.

We contribute to

  • Environmental restoration
  • Inclusive economic participation
  • Community resilience

At the same time, we reinforce our core business in circular plastics and support the transition toward a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

Social impact priorities

Our social impact strategy responds to what matters most to our stakeholders and to society, focusing where IMG Group's expertise can add the greatest value — as identified through our Double Materiality Analysis.

We prioritise:

  • Areas where needs are most significant
  • Areas where IMG Group's expertise can make the strongest contribution
  • Initiatives with strong potential for scalable impact

To maximise impact, IMG Group structures its initiatives around six strategic priorities.

Advancing inclusion across circular value chains

Several initiatives specifically focus on end-of-life value chains, including:
  • Waste pickers
  • Circular entrepreneurship
  • Community-based recycling systems
These are complemented by education and awareness programmes that support more inclusive and responsible circular economy models.

Governance and accountability

Our social impact activities are managed through a structured governance framework designed to ensure transparency, accountability and measurable impact.

  • Selection
  • Due Diligence
  • Agreement
  • Implementation
  • Monitoring
  • Feedback

Social impact is delivered through three complementary channels

Strategic partnerships with civil society organisations and local institutions
Direct project implementation, including corporate volunteering initiatives
The adaPETation® Network, enabling scalable circular economy solutions

Through these channels, we build long-term partnerships and support initiatives that generate meaningful, context-specific outcomes while enabling scalability.

How we work

The Social Impact Department coordinates all initiatives, ensuring alignment with IMG Group’s sustainability strategy and material topics identified through the Double Materiality Analysis.

Projects and partnerships are selected through a robust process that prioritises:

  • Measurable impact
  • Transparency
  • Long-term value creation

All major collaborations undergo formal due diligence, including:

  • Assessment of governance and financial transparency
  • Evaluation of social, environmental and ethical risks
  • Definition of clear objectives, timelines and KPIs

Responsible and inclusive approach

We promote participatory project design, ensuring that partner communities are actively involved in identifying needs and shaping solutions.

This helps ensure that initiatives are:
  • Context-specific
  • Inclusive
  • Locally relevant
IMG Group applies a zero-tolerance approach to:
  • Child labour
  • Forced labour
  • Human trafficking
  • Abuse and exploitation
Beyond our zero-tolerance policy, these risks are addressed through our governance and delivery model.
Alongside this, supported initiatives help address the structural barriers that increase these risks by:
  • Expanding access to education
  • Strengthening awareness
  • Promoting inclusive environments

All projects are implemented in line with our Code of Ethics and Labour and Human Rights Policy, with strict safeguards to protect children and vulnerable individuals.

As outlined in our Statement on the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we work alongside Indigenous Peoples through programmes that promote education, capacity building and sustainable livelihoods, implemented through targeted initiatives in regions where Indigenous Peoples live.

Partnerships & accountability

As a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, IMG Group upholds its Ten Principles and reports annually through the UNGC's Communication on Progress.

Separately, our own governance framework requires partner organisations to:

  • Report on implementation and outcomes
  • Track progress through defined KPIs
  • Provide financial transparency

We complement this with qualitative feedback from communities, so that impact reflects real needs and lived experience. Selected partners also receive institutional support to strengthen their governance, transparency and long-term capacity (SDG 16).

Measuring impact

IMG Group is committed to transparent reporting of our social impact performance through defined KPIs and regular public disclosure. We use them to:
This structured approach enables continuous improvement and helps ensure that its social impact activities contribute to long-term environmental and social value.
